Highlights - Day 5 at GYSS

The Lindau Lecture

Jürgen Kluge, Chairman of the Lindau Foundation Board and Council Member for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings

Dr. Jürgen Kluge, Chairman of the Lindau Foundation Board, delivered the closing lecture of Global Young Scientists Summit 2017, urging participants to be avant-garde, to go out and change the world. “Dive in,” he said, “Your brain will switch off [the fear of the unknown] and your body will do it.”

Dr. Kluge used the lecture to share with the young scientists some life lessons that he wished he knew when he was 30. Armed with a list of retrospective thoughts, which he detailed over the hour’s lecture, he urged them to embrace change as “we live in revolutionary times”.

Dr. Kluge said that the ‘real adventures are in the head’, and that one should stick to principles of rationality of true or false, not like or dislike. He said it was important to work together in friendly competition, as ‘one winged birds can’t fly’. That management really matters, as do people and values.

Echoing many of the speakers this week, Dr. Kluge stressed to the young scientists that they are the future and to be brave, “It’s your world - go shape it,” he urged.
